The Axis of Evil revisited
نویسنده
چکیده
In light of the three-year data release from WMAP we re-examine the evidence for the “Axis of Evil”. We discover that previous frequentist methods are not robust with respect to the data-sets available and different treatments of the galactic plane. We identify the cause of the instability and show that this result is not a weakness of the data. This is further confirmed by exhibiting an alternative approach, Bayesian in flavour, and based on a likelihood method and the information criteria. We find strong (and sometimes decisive) evidence for the “Axis of Evil” in almost all renditions of the WMAP data. However some significant differences between data-sets remain, and the quantitative aspects of the result depend on the particular information criteria used.

Induction of secondary axis in hydra revisited: New insights into pattern formation
In 1909, several years before the famous `Organizer’ experiments of Spemann and Mangold, Ethel Browne demonstrated induction of a secondary axis in hydra by grafting a hypostome. Based on this and subsequent work, in the late sixties, Lewis Wolpert proposed the theory of morphogen gradients and positional information. We have studied secondary axis induction by hypostome and foot tissue using t...
متن کاملThe axis of evil - a polarization perspective
We search for an unusual alignment of the preferred axes of the quadrupole and octopole, the so-called axis of evil, in the CMB temperature and polarization data from WMAP. We split the temperature and polarization maps into a part correlated with the respective other map, and a part uncorrelated with that. We then determine the preferred axes for the quadrupole and octopole in all four of thos...
متن کاملProblem of Evil in Taoism
This paper attempts to present the Taoist understanding of evil. In the Taoist tradition, especially in Tao Te Ching, evil is divided into two categories: causal evil and consequential evil. Causal evils are those evils that are said to be the causes of other evils; consequential evils are those that are said to be the consequences of the causal evils. Causal evils originate from human will, an...
متن کاملAnimal Suffering: A Moorean Response to a Problem of Evil
In this paper, I propose a new response to a particular instance of the problem of evil: the problem of animal suffering. My solution, in brief, is that the rational theist may argue, justifiably, that an omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent God would not allow gratuitous animal suffering to occur, and, therefore, all instances of animal suffering that are encountered are not instanc...
